Professor Kwan is a basic research scientist specializing in cardiovascular sciences. His research interest spans over molecular pharmacology, cellular physiology and natural product research including Chinese medicine, with an emphasis on cellular regulation of calcium [細胞游離鈣調控] and cell signaling [細胞信息傳遞]processes. He is a founding member of the Smooth Muscle Research Program of McMaster University as well as a founding member of the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Medicine of the University of Hong Kong. He is a founding member of the cross strait Symposium on Cardiovascualr Sciences, the Hong Kong Physiology Symposium, International Sympsoium on Vascular Biology at China Medical University and the Association of the Asia Pacific Association for PBL in Health Sciences. To this date, Prof. Kwan has published nearly 360 full-length papers including 25 book chapters and proceeding papers (excluding meeting abstracts). Of these papers, 256 are listed in the ISI current content. He has served and is still serving on Editorial Advisory Board of several international journals. He is an external reviewer for manuscripts, research grants and academic promotions worldwide. Prof. Kwan is also a consultant in "Problem-based learning" (PBL)in medical education. He served as a short-term WHO consultant on PBL issues in the Philippines. He has been honored with Visiting Professorship in 10 top medical Universities in China plus the Medical Faculty at the University of Hong Kong [香港大學], the Chinese University of Hong Kong [香港中文大學], the National University of Singapore [新加坡大學], and two medical schools in Taiwan. He moved to Taiwan in late 2005 to accept a senior psotion at China Medical University [中國醫藥大學] in Taichung, Taiwan. He served as the inaugural Director of Faculty Development (2005 till present) and International Affairs (2005-2009), building these two new centers from the scratch. This fits well his personal character as being creative and risk-taking, as you will see in his personal website.
