Problem based learning (PBL)

Medical Camp Poster
PBL can also be applied to the education of High School Students. This MedCamp is different from those offered by each medical schools in that the students will NOT be taught via pre-packaged lectures or laboratories. They learn in groups through discussion and information search on their own initiatives(self-directed learning).
During tutorial session at McMaster
Students plan for themselves on the content and process of learning based on the problem scenario or the case in question. They inquire, research, present, explain, debate, exchange, argue, challenge and defend their ideas and understanding.
A small group tutorial at HKU
PBL is more effective in small group tutorial format. This way of learning physiology was first introduced by me to HKU medical school in the Department of Physiology in 1994, 3 years before HKU medical school officially adopted PBL in its new curriculum in 1997.
A PBL tutorial in Taiwan
The oriental students can do PBL just like any other students in the world. The question is actually that can the teachers do it well?
A group doing CPC at McMaster
It is fun! it is creative!
Orientation for OSCE observers at McMaster University
About 90 faculty members were recruited for the OSCE assessment for unit 2, unit 3 and graduating students. Each station (one observer and one standard patient) handles 20 students over 4-5 hours.
