Research Interests
a) Biochemistry and biophysics of metalloenzymes, role of metal ions in enzyme catalysis. Spectroscopic studies of protein structure and confromation.
b) Cellular physiology of smooth muscles: membrane biochemistry and biophysics, ion transport and membrane-associated enzymes.
c) Pharmacology of receptor-ligand interactions and signal transduction mechanisms in smooth muscles.
d) Biochemical basis of vascular membrane changes in the pathophysiology of vascular and nonvascular smooth muscles: e.g., in hypertension, diabetes and shock, and endothelium-vascular muscle interactions.
e) Role of intracellular Ca2+ in excitation-contraction as well as stimulation-secretion coupling; Ca2+ signaling and membrane transduction mechanisms.
f) Pharmacology of natural products including Chinese medicinal herbs with actions on Ca2+ channels, Ca2+-pumps and membrane receptors.
g) Reactive oxygen species and oxidative stress on smooth muscle function

My students and research staff
I have had an international group of students and staff for almost 3 decades at McMaster.
A presentation on vascular effects of snake venom
Dr. Zhang Wen-Bo (China) and Dr. Debra S.M. Sim (Malaysia) did the work.
Calcium imaging of vascular endothelial cells stimulated with ATP and DDE (environmental pollutant)
When cytosolic free calcium ions level rises, the fluorescence intensity increases as brightened psudocolor. The calcium ion chelator totally reduced the elevated cytosolic calcium concentration to the resting level.
