Although some introductions have been made since mid-1990s to several medical schools in China, their responses were luke-warm due to lack of incentives, lack of understanding and practical difficulties in expertise and policy management. In recent years, the interest in PBL is growing as the university system in China is shiftting to the American style and increasingly more autonomy and funding became available to the universities. This year in April/May, I visited Wuhan University in Wuhan and Zhong Shan University in Guangzhou to launch a introductory 2-day PBL workshop in medical education. In August, I also conducted a 2-day PBL workshop in the Capital Medical University in Beijing, which is sponsored by the Chinese Association of Physiological Societies. An introductory PBL lecture and workshop is being planned for Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University in Shangahi in mid October, 2005. Also, a plan to visit Shandong Medical University is being planned for the Spring of 2006.

| A region of PBL potential? | | Can educators and students in this region learn and use PBL in education including medical education? Some think not due to the traditional Asian culture. This is currently more of a political rather than an academic issue. It will take some time. I will try to find out the answer in 5 years. |

| PBL workshops in Taiwan in 2004 | | I toured across the entire Taiwan island and conducted one-week PBL workshop each (with hands-on practice sessions) in 4 medical centers representing different geographic parts of Taiwan. My conclusion: It is difficult but possible to do PBL in Taiwan. The difficulty lies in the heavy traditional reliance on acquisition of knowledge contents rather than the learning process and attitudes. Change must start with teachers and educational administrators. |
